And we want to share that with our friends. With Sommet Support all the way.

Girona and Catalonia; rich in history, with a vibrant cycling and cultural heart

It flies under the radar a little for the many. But for those who know Girona is a paradise for cycling.

Amazing roads - climbs, tree lined, coastal - historic villages, world’s best cuisine & a warm generous Mediterranean culture, with cycling at it’s heart. There’s enough challenging terrain to push yourself, yet enough variety to enjoy. Girona offers so much variety to exceed all expectations. On & off the bike.

Local produce & dining is spectacular in this Romanesque city. The quality of local restaurants will knock your socks off. Some of the World’s best cuisine is in Catalonia & Girona, with the dynamic Catalan cuisine culture through the whole region. The variety & quality of eating is second to none.

There is also the best specialty café going - Sommet are good friends with Amber & Christian Meier, who’s La Fábrica cafe and new baby, Espresso Mafia coffee roasting hub. Both in the heart of the old town and at the heart of Girona cycling.

La Fab might as well be called Pro CC Café, based on the clientele! Maison du Velo will have a private dinner arranged here one evening.

All this, an hour from landing at Barcelona airport.

Roadbook in brief

Day One, Arrival - airport transfer, lunch & ride!

60km/1,000m; rolling, quiet, lush. Els Àngels climb (Strava time!). Roman village coffee stop

Day Two, Pro Test Queen Stage & Optional Rocacorba

140km/2,700m Stunning (long and tough) Mar de Deu climb with sea & Pyrenean vistas, yet another stunning Roman village stop, an Olympic lake & the (in)famous Rocacorba (Strava/suffer time!)

Day Three, Seaside beauty

140km/2,200m incredible, twisting, winding, coastal beauty, switchback climb, rolling beauty

Day Four, Beautiful 40km loop to leave you with sunkissed memories of Girona and time for a coffee.

40km/700m simply joyous, small, winding, lush green roads. Worth the trip for this 40k. Pack.

Challenging and inspiring riding over the whole weekend

Over the weekend of the Pro Town experience, you’ll ride small local roads, valley roads, rolling hills, coastal ribbons & steep long climbs, challenging yourself as do the Pros. Along the way you’ll take in the great variety of views and vegetations, secluded Romanesque villages, local cuisine & strong local culture, all in the lea of the Catalan Pyrenees.

There’s the infamous Rocacorba - eponymous of David Millar’s exclusive cycle club - a benchmark for years; 10km (13 with early rolls we don’t count) at around 8% with 15+% sections.

The rolling start or Mar de Deu, which becomes a long 18km climb with views from the Pyrenean mountains dropping into the Med to inland views of mountain ranges. Amazing.

As for the Med, there’s our coastal ride which with a cliff top coast hugging section as good as any.

There is such a network of small roads, there will be something new, different & inspiring every day. Four days will just scratch the surface.

It can’t be much better, can it?

Start each day with coffee at the Pro’s cafe, La Fábrica? Paradise!

Girona. A footnote about the history & culture of our roman stronghold

Girona was blessed with much wealth in medieval times & this produced many fine Romanesque and Gothic buildings, which survived repeated attacks & sieges over the years. A walled city in the best style of the famous Italian Roman cities it was directly on Via Augusta, the ancient Roman road connecting Rome & Cadiz in deepest Spain; the cobbled street through Girona was a direct part of that road. Girona has a captivating old town with those cobbled narrow streets, open squares, a grand imposing cathedral, fortifications, medieval baths & fabulously, coloured buildings lining the meandering River Onyar which is spanned by a series of pedestrian bridges (Pont de Ferro or Eiffel, by the Eiffel Tower’s Gustave Eiffel).

Girona has more than 9th Century heritage. More recently, in the province of Girona, the coast in particular, artists of the likes of Dali, Gaudi, Picasso & more found both sanctuary & inspiration.

Modern Girona is a renowned centre for sport, cuisine & lifestyle. An over century old, prestige, jeweler Pere Quera 1887, many gastrobars, boutiques & galleries subtly, now secreted, mixing the contemporary in the same medieval palaces.
